Double Bark Thickness Estimation Models of Common European Broadleaved Species for Harvester Timber Volume Estimation in Czechia

The share of the annual volume harvester-produced timber in Czech forest bioeconomy has increased last decades. To estimate under-bark volume, harvester systems allow choosing between two different bark deduction models – diameter band (DBM) and linear model. However, were not calibrated for conditions forestry. Therefore, objective this research was to develop, local Czechia, functions estimating double thickness groups broadleaved species (beech oak) test their viability based on real harvest data. create functions, official cubing tables used. Data from harvests gathered fifteen harvesters. A sample containing 4995 logs belonging beech group analyzed using descriptive statistics Paired Wilcoxon tests. mean 15.1 mm (polynomial model). For oak group, it 15.48 (polynomial) or 15.49 (linear). results revealed that estimated by polynomial function 7.08 mm. estimates closer value (6.84 mm) than DBM (6.68 mm). we can state newly developed be used fully mechanized harvesting instead manual methods Czechia.
